Energy Bills: How To Save $? (Part 1)

  3. Energy Bills: How To Save $? (Part 1)

It may not have been the coldest of winters this year, but wanting to feel cozy at home during the evenings and weekends means having to potentially turn up the heat! This two-part blog will explain ways in which you can optimize your savings when it comes to keeping warm at home.

1) Chim-chimney

If you have one at home, it’s most people’s favourite hanging out place in comfortable clothing and a warm tea. However, it seems many get it wrong with the management of the chimney with keeping the warm air in – much of this warm air goes up the chimney while the fire is on, so the best way for this chimney to be effective is to choke it up, and prevent the warm air from leaving home! It doesn’t cost a dime to do that.

2) Air leaks

This would require a bit of dirty work, in very tight spots at home. You’d be required to seal any spaces around windows, doors and even pipes at homes to prevent any warm air from leaving, and cool air from entering. Covering these minuscule spaces can make a 100$ difference a year, and it doesn’t cost very much – half the price at most.

3) System tune-up

On top of the above two, fine tuning your heating system through a contractor can do your bills some good. It may feel like an annual heavy investment, but can save you plenty of money in the long term. The good part is that you don’t need to get your hands dirty and a professional can take care of it for you!

4) Appliances

Modern-day house appliances are crucial to a clean and productive home. Many of these appliances are now made to help you save on energy bills; fridges, dishwashers and washing machines. Another heavy investment into Energy Star certified machines that can get you covered for the next half decade.

5) Insulation

Depending on how old your house is, insulation could benefit it greatly. It’s another way to prevent air leaks around the home, and stay warm throughout winter!

See you in March for part II!
